   Animal welfare refers

“According to the OIE Terrestrial Code, “animal welfare means how an animal is coping with the conditions in which it lives”. The OIE guiding principles on animal welfare also mention the universally recognized “Five Freedoms”, published in 1965 to describe the right to welfare of animals under human control. The Five Freedoms are:

      —Freedom from thirst and hunger
      —Freedom from discomfort
—Freedom from unnecessary pain, injury, and disease
—Freedom to express most normal behavior
      —Freedom from fear and distress

“Protection of biodiversity is therefore crucial both for animals and humans, in particular at a time when global challenges are posed by growing human population; increasing movement of goods, animals and people, together with pathogens and invasive species; and climate changes, to name a few.

Protection of biodiversity is also one of the platforms where intersectional collaboration between animal and human health and environmental health needs to be developed and reinforced under the “One Health” initiatives.”
