Prime Insurance traces its origins to 1995 when it was known as Cogear Ltd, a licensed general and life insurance company authorised by the regulator, National Bank of Rwanda (BNR). To harmonise the conduct of insurance market in Rwanda, the regulator enacted a directive that required insurance companies to separate their general and non-life insurance businesses. To comply with this regulation as well as to expand its business, Cogear Ltd created a new company called Prime Life Assurance Ltd which was incorporated in December 2011 and authorised to transact long-term (life) insurance policies in May 2012.

The rebranding of Cogear Ltd and Prime Life Assurance Ltd was initiated following the acquisition by Greenoaks Global Holdings Ltd (UK), an international insurance group based in London, in March 2014. Greenoaks experience as well as its international recognition leads Prime to a new level of insurance specialisation offering an outstanding, instant and reliable insurance service to the Rwandan market.

On September 29th 2014, staff moved into the new Head Office located in RSSB building, Tower II, African Union Boulevard. The official launch of Prime Insurance Ltd and Prime Life Insurance Ltd was 17th October 2014.
