Project Laut was established in 2020 with the aim of raising awareness and improving the information available on the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles in Indonesia. In addition, Project Laut now focuses on the restoration of the marine habitat surrounding the island of Nusa Penida. Our Divemaster and Conservation Internship is also central to the operations. Within a matter of months, interns not only receive their SSI Divemaster certification, but regularly participate in hawksbill identification and learn coral restoration techniques. To date, our organization has certified over 50 Divemasters, identified over 250 individual hawksbill sea turtles and made over 400 resightings of hawksbills. Additionally, Project Laut has restored over 100m2 of previously dredged ocean habitat via coral planting on rebar structures. Our program is meticulously designed to equip university students and recent graduates with practical, hands-on conservation experience in one of the world's marine biodiversity hotspots.

Program Highlights:

Hawksbill Turtle Monitoring: Engage in intricate photo-identification processes, track turtle movements, and contribute to our significant database with over 300 identified turtles and 2000+ interactions.

Coral Restoration Initiatives: Learn the MARRS assisted reef technique, experiment with coral planting strategies, and be part of our proud achievement in coral restoration with over 100 square meters of reef stabilized.

Comprehensive Divemaster Training: Our program, renowned for its depth, ensures that every intern undertakes between 60-100 dives, acquainting them with the rich marine biodiversity of Nusa Penida.

Spanning 8 to 14 weeks, the program offers flexibility, with options for week-by-week extensions.

Positioned in the marine protected area of Nusa Penida, Bali, our location serves as both a stunning backdrop and a significant site for marine conservation efforts.
