Nicolas Smith

Provost at QUT

Professor Nic Smith joined QUT as Provost in April 2020 after holding professorial appointments as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Auckland since 2013, Head of Biomedical Engineering at Kings College, London and before that Professor of Computational Physiology at the University Computing Laboratory, University of Oxford. As Provost, Nic is a critical contributor to the general management of the University and provides intellectual and strategic leadership, directorship and evaluation for all of QUT’s academic activities. The Provost deputises for the Vice-Chancellor in her absence. He has authored more than 160 peer reviewed journal publications and 350 conference publications. He is also the lead-author on several patent applications for the development of anatomically based physiological models and specific applications. He is a fellow of the New Zealand Royal Society and Engineering New Zealand. Nic has a degree in Engineering Science with First Class Honours and PhD in Engineering Science from the University of Auckland, in addition to a Master of Philosophy from the University of Oxford. Nic’s research expertise lies in computational biology and cardiac physiology where he has developed specific models on muscular contraction to improve the understanding of blood flow in the heart. This work is focuses on the development of unique computational models that have been integrated with patient images and applied in hospitals to improve diagnosis and treatment of Heart Disease.
