Thomas M. has a diverse range of work experience. In 1990, they started as a Systems Programmer/Administrator II at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - School of Public Health, where they performed cost and data analysis and supervised a network support staff. Thomas then moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - Gillings School of Global Public Health, where they served as the Manager of Systems and Information and Network Security, overseeing web server operations and acting as an information security liaison. At the same institution, Thomas also held the role of Manager of End User Support, Information and Network Security, managing a desktop support team. Thomas later worked as an FISMA Security Analyst at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Carolina Population Center, reviewing security plans and updating related documentation. Thomas also volunteered as a Finance Committee Volunteer at Chatham Marketplace, a co-op grocery store, from 2006 to 2019. Currently, Thomas is employed at Railinc as a Principal Security Analyst, leading the planning and implementation of IT security defenses and responses.

Thomas M. has a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree with a specialization in Public Administration: Management, Quant and Qual Analysis, Cost-Benefit Analysis from North Carolina State University. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Their BA degree was in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a focus on Creative Writing and Biochemistry. Additionally, Thomas M. holds a certification as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) from (ISC)², which they obtained in January 2012.
