Derek Coetzee

Derek Coetzee has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Derek is currently working as the Manager of Software Engineering - D&R at Rapid7 since January 2022. Prior to this, they worked as the CTO of Getvisibility from November 2017 to February 2022, where they designed and implemented data discovery and protection software. Derek also collaborated with companies like Microsoft, IBM, and Paloalto in this role.

Before joining Getvisibility, Coetzee served as the Chief Architect and Head of Infrastructure at Xanadu Consultancy from January 2016 to October 2017. Derek was responsible for the software architectural designs and re-architected the infrastructure stack to provide a highly-tolerant, high-speed infrastructure for micro-service deployment. Derek also held the position of Xanadu Data Cloud Architect and Product Owner from October 2014 to December 2015, where they initiated and implemented a microservices private data cloud.

From September 2013 to September 2014, Coetzee worked as the Trading Platform CTO at Xanadu Consultancy, overseeing the execution and seeding of back-office software roadmaps and technical innovation. Derek was also involved in enterprise architecture design and technical strategy across all verticals in the company.

Before their tenure at Xanadu Consultancy, Coetzee briefly worked as an IT Consultant at Smarttech247 in July and August 2013. Prior to that, they held various roles at Digisoft.tv from 2000 to 2013. Derek served as the CTO, gaining extensive experience in deploying content services across different technologies and end devices. Derek also worked as a Senior Developer and Team Lead, focusing on C/C++, DCOM/ATL, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Coetzee began their career as the Technical Director and Co-Founder of MSI South Africa, a start-up that developed interactive services for mobile devices. Derek'srole involved developing an interactive mobile application for share portfolio management.

Derek also gained experience in the telecommunications industry, working at Vodacom from 1994 to 1999. Derek held positions such as IT Resource Manager and IT Support Manager, where they focused on setting up a help desk and support infrastructure, as well as standardizing PC hardware and software.

Coetzee's early career included managing IT support for the Electrical Engineering department at the University of Cape Town from 1991 to 1994. Derek handled a wide range of UNIX machines and Windows systems, managing various applications and packages.

Derek Coetzee obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Stellenbosch University, where they studied from 1981 to 1985. Later, they pursued a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Business Administration, Management, and Operations from the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika starting from 1997. The end year is not provided for their MBA program.

Additionally, Derek Coetzee attained the Certified ScrumMaster certification from the Scrum Alliance in August 2015. Derek also has a certification titled "What's New in Java 8," but the institution, as well as the month and year obtained, are not specified.
