Recite (https://reciteworks.com) started life as an academic’s dream wading through his 20th round of references at the end of a busy day. Solving the problem for students, professors, researchers and editors alike still defines us today. The point of our tool is to enable academic writers to get their references checked and completed thoroughly while learning crucial APA referencing rules at the same time. By drastically speeding up the tedious process of checking for academic referencing issues, Recite allows the author to concentrate on their writing.

Recite underwent a lengthy period of beta testing, when access was free to everybody. This enabled us to test and polish our tool, so that we could launch a comprehensive and robust product. Our site remains completely free to anybody with a document of 2,500 words or fewer, with 50 references or fewer, making this tier perfect for undergraduates.

With one of our founders being an Associate Professor in Psychology and the other a Software Developer with more than 20 years experience, Recite solves real-life academic writing challenges with innovative solutions. Recite detects discrepancies between citations and reference list entries (i.e. date variations, author typos, etc.) and style issues (alphabetisation, use of et al., etc.) alongside additional useful features. The tool will help you to understand your document differently by giving you a different view of your work. Recite also checks your reference list against the Crossref database, allowing us to highlight other issues (missing author, incorrect date, etc.) along with highlighting retracted works. Unlike other reference-checking tools, Recite highlights what should be done to rectify each issue enabling you to learn APA referencing whilst correcting your document. Recite has already checked over 350,000,000 academic citations to date and is recommended by a growing number of universities worldwide.
