Gavin Heavyside

Engineering Manager, Cloud at Redpanda Data

Gavin Heavyside has a wide range of work experience in various roles and industries. Starting in 1999, they worked as a Software Engineer at Nortel Networks, where they developed telephony protocols for switching products. Gavin then joined Intuwave in 2003 as a Software Engineer, where they led the connectivity team and was responsible for developing and maintaining connectivity solutions for smartphones. In 2007, they joined ARM as a Staff Engineer, where they developed and supported communications between ARM's debug product and ARM processors.

In 2008, Gavin joined Journey Dynamics Ltd. as a Senior Software Engineer, where they were responsible for designing and developing data processing and analysis tools for forecasting road traffic congestion. In 2010, they co-founded MyDrive Solutions and served as the Director of Software Engineering. Gavin later became the CTO, overseeing the design of a virtualized IT business and cloud-native products and services. MyDrive Solutions was later acquired by Assicurazioni Generali.

In 2020, Gavin became a Non-Executive Director at Bayes Street Analytics, where they provided strategic guidance. Gavin also served as the CTO and Co-founder, leading the technical strategy and implementation of a mobility data platform. Additionally, they worked as the CTO and Founding Team member at COCO+, a certified B Corporation™ that focuses on fighting climate change through products and services that offset CO2 emissions. Gavin was responsible for technology strategy, information security, and privacy.

Gavin's most recent roles include positions at Community.com and Redpanda Data. At Community.com, they held the role of Principal Engineering Manager and Director of Engineering, leading teams and projects related to platform and data engineering. At Redpanda Data, they worked as an Engineering Manager, overseeing cloud-related operations.

Throughout their career, Gavin has demonstrated expertise in technology strategy, project management, information security, cloud infrastructure, and vendor management. Gavin has experience in various programming languages and platforms, including Ruby on Rails, React, React Native, AWS, Terraform, and more.

Gavin Heavyside completed their education from 1995 to 1999 at the University of Cambridge, where they obtained an MA and MEng degree in Electrical & Information Sciences. In addition to their formal education, Gavin has also acquired several certifications over the years. In December 2020, they received the ISO 27001 Lead Implementer - Information Security Certification from IBITGQ. Gavin further expanded their knowledge and expertise by obtaining the Certified Kubernetes Administrator certification from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) in December 2022, followed by the Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist certification in June 2023, also from CNCF. Gavin has also obtained certifications in AWS, including the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate in October 2018 and the AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional in November 2018. Additionally, they completed the Algorithms: Design and Analysis, Part 1 course from Coursera in July 2012.
