Derek Batts has held a variety of roles in the technology and service industries. From 2013 to 2017, they worked as an Embroidery Machine Operator for Righteous Threads Embroidery, a Golf Maintenance Team Member for Grandover Resort, a Co-founder for HangBee, a Software Engineering Intern for Get Spiffy, Inc, a Teaching Assistant for CSC 482: Advanced Game Projects and a Peer Teaching Fellow for CSC 216: Java Programming Concepts at North Carolina State University, and a Client Software Engineer for Relay. In these roles, Batts was responsible for operating computerized embroidery machines, maintaining and repairing shop computers, assisting with the maintenance and repair of embroidery equipment, designing and writing a small scale custom UI engine in JavaScript, integrating UI engine with back-end networking system, collaborating with team members to design the HangBee stack, designing/coding/testing features and fixes for Rails back-end, working with development team to handle deployment of new features/fixes across multiple software platforms, managing lab session, providing feedback for student work, acting as a resource for students, teaching and managing lab section, holding office hours to be a resource for students, and grading student work and providing constructive feedback.

Derek Batts attended North Carolina State University from 2012 to 2017, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Game Development Concentration.
