Matt Frey

Full-Stack Engineer at Render Better

Matt Frey is a Full-Stack Engineer at Render Better. Prior to that, they worked as Lead Member of Technical Staff at athenahealth from June 2012 to September 2018. There, they were responsible for the development of hospital pharmacy and medication workflows in athenahealth's cloud based electronic medical record. Matt provided technical direction to the development team, worked closely with product management and design to plan releases, and leveraged team skills to execute against sprint goals. In their time at athenahealth, they strengthened their skills in front-end technologies, outcome oriented Agile execution, and coordination across multiple teams to deliver features.

Highlights of their time at athenahealth include driving team adoption of React Redux over existing BackboneJS stack, improving developer productivity and frontend testing; extending microservice powered by python and ReportLab’s PDF toolkit to format and print pharmacy dispensing reports; interfacing with barcode scanners to prefill administration data when a medication is scanned; and leading a team of 5 developers to redesign the Medication Administration Record addressing major problems with usability, patient safety, billing, and tech debt. As a result of the redesign, automatic medication billing increased by 25% and the nurse barcode scanning rate doubled.

Matt Frey attended UC San Diego for their undergraduate degree, where they studied mechanical engineering. After graduation, they pursued a post-baccalaureate degree in computer science at Tufts University. Matt is currently enrolled at Lund University.

They are on a team with Peter Mercado - Back-End Engineer, Juan Solano - Full-Stack Engineer, and Gersen Medina - Senior Front-End Developer. Matt Frey reports to Luke Pammant, CTO.
