Eric Sebesta

Director of Engineering at Retro Studios

Eric Sebesta has a diverse and extensive work experience in the gaming industry. Eric began their career as a Programming Intern at Electronic Arts (EA) in 1997 and later worked as a Programmer at Bootprint Entertainment. Eric then returned to EA as a Programmer for Ultima Online 2, where they were responsible for game feature and tool development.

Sebesta joined Sony Online Entertainment in 2001 as a Programmer for Star Wars Galaxies, where they authored client and server game systems. Eric also worked on developing a Java-based custom scripting language.

In 2006, Sebesta became a Senior Programmer at Spacetime Studios and played a key role in the development of the Spacetime Engine, which powered several successful mobile MMOs. Eric specifically worked on the unreleased sci-fi MMO-action game, Blackstar.

Sebesta joined Bioware in 2008 and took on various roles, including Senior Gameplay Programmer, Associate Technical Director, and Technical Director for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Eric contributed to the game's stability, combat systems, and network replication of game state. Sebesta also led an internal security team that fought against in-game fraud.

In 2012, Sebesta joined BattleCry Studios as a Lead Gameplay Engineer. Eric'sresponsibilities included converting gameplay systems for Fallout 4 to a client-server environment and mentoring engineers. Eric also hired and trained developers for BATTLECRY.

Sebesta then moved to Bethesda Game Studios in 2018 as a Lead Gameplay Engineer and later became the Technical Director for Fallout 76. Eric led a team of engineers and focused on stabilizing and growing the game. Sebesta collaborated with other directors and communicated with stakeholders to meet strategic goals and revenue targets.

Sebesta joined Unity in 2019 as an Engineering Manager for Cloud and later became a Principal Software Engineer. Eric was responsible for code architecture, mentoring, and leadership. Eric'swork at Unity Labs involved creating a more web-friendly pathway for Unity developers and consumers. Sebesta also temporarily took on Product and Project Management responsibilities.

Most recently, Sebesta joined Retro Studios in 2023 as the Director of Engineering.

Eric Sebesta pursued their education in a diligent and well-rounded manner. Eric first attended The University of Texas at Austin from 1995 to 1999, earning a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science. Later, from 2002 to 2006, they returned to the same institution to further their education by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English.

In addition to their formal education, Eric also acquired several certifications to enhance their professional skills. In June 2022, they completed the "C++: Advanced Topics" certification at LinkedIn. Eric also successfully completed the "Enterprise Architecture Foundations," "Software Architecture: Breaking a Monolith into Microservices," "Software Architecture: Domain-Driven Design," and "Software Architecture: From Developer to Architect" certifications, all of which were obtained from LinkedIn as well.

Overall, Eric's educational background and continuous pursuit of certifications reflect their commitment to growth and expertise in both computer science and English.
