In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the overdose crisis reached new heights that call for rethinking our response. The Opioid Epidemic began in the 1990s with the rise
in prescription opioid use and abuse. By 2002, opioids became the leading cause of drug overdose deaths. In 2013, the synthetic opioid wave caused a second inflection point. Since 2013, opioid overdose deaths have grown 4x
faster than non-opioid overdoses; by 2021,
3 out of 4 overdose deaths were caused by opioids. In addition to these tragic deaths, almost 200,000 people are revived from their opioid overdose annually. While opioids are very effective at relieving acute and chronic
pain, up to 50% of patients prescribed opioids may develop Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
