Nigel Backhouse

Nigel Backhouse is a seasoned senior leader currently serving as the General Manager of Smelting and Technology at Rio Tinto. With extensive experience in improvement opportunity identification, system development, and strategic planning, Nigel has successfully managed diverse teams across multiple cultures and locations. They have held various leadership roles, including acting as Chief Operating Officer and leading the Carbon Research and Development program. Nigel holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering with Honours from the University of Newcastle and completed the Company Directors Course in Governance at the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
