The Root is an advocate, in Iceland, for women and non-binary PWUD/S, promoting their human rights and welfare. The Root's mission is to work for harm reduction, human rights and trauma and gender informed approaches. As well as to produce information, research, knowledge building, on these matters for the good of women and non-binary people. 
The Root operates Konukot, an emergency shelter for homeless women in Reykjavík, according to a contract with the city of Reykjavík.
The Root is a member of FEANTSA - European Federation of National Organisations Working with the Homeless, International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC), Correlation – European Harm Reduction Network (C-EHRN) and Icelandic Women’s Rights Association´- IWRA. 
The Root participates in the Intersectional Approach to Combating Homelessness for Women project - INTERACT (2025-2027) funded by the European Social fund + 
The Root received funding from the Ministry of Health in Iceland.
