Rybka’s roots trace back to 1913, when Walter J. Armstrong founded the firm in Montreal. Walter commissioned Dr. Karl Rybka to open a Toronto office in 1933, ushering in a new era with landmark projects like the Toronto Stock Exchange, Maple Leaf Gardens, and the Bank of Nova Scotia. By the late 1960s, the firm was renamed Rybka, Smith and Ginsler Limited.

In 2005, rybka merged with Marshall Macklin Monaghan (later MMM Group), eventually becoming part of WSP. In 2021, rybka re-emerged as an independent building consulting firm. 

Most recently, rybka merged with Ellard-Willson Engineering Limited—founded in the 1950s and known for its rich legacy and diverse project portfolio—to form rybka Ellard Willson Incorporated. This partnership blends deep experience with forward-thinking innovation to design human-centered buildings that promote health, sustainability, and well-being—inside and out.
