Brent Lance

Co-Founder/CTO

Brent Lance is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sandtable, a role they have held since 2024. They help the Army and the DoD solve hard problems and previously served as Senior Scientific Advisor to Project Maven for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, as ML Advisor to PdM OMFV, and as a division chief at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, where they led a team of 100 researchers. They earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (2003–2008), with a dissertation on procedurally generating gaze shifts for animated characters to reveal internal emotional states, and also held an MS and a BS from USC. Earlier in their career, they conducted postdoctoral research at the Information Sciences Institute and the USC Institute for Creative Technologies, focusing on computational neuroscience and expressive gaze in animation.
