They previously served as a Principal Scientist at Genzyme from 2007 to 2010, focusing on small molecular inhibitors for Type 2 Diabetes treatment. Since then, they have been involved in the research and development of novel therapies for rare genetic disorders at Genzyme. Earlier in their career, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Cancer Institute from 1988 to 1992, where they studied the role of the mos proto-oncogene in oocyte maturation and the cell cycle. Nelson earned their Bachelor of Science degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan and later obtained a PhD in Molecular Biology from Northwestern University.
