John Ness has an extensive work experience in the media industry. John began their career as a Freelance Reporter for various media outlets such as Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, and UPI, covering stories in East and West Africa. John then worked as a Freelance Reporter for Newsweek in New York. John later joined AOL CityGuide as a Producer and then transitioned to AOL as a Senior Producer, where they managed the editorial vision for the popular sports blog, "FanHouse". John was responsible for growing FanHouse into the largest sports blog on the web and managing a team of sixty writers. John also worked as an Executive Editor for NBC Universal, where they created several blog brands that eventually became television shows and news segments. John joined Patch.com as Director, News Integration, overseeing the integration of news operations between Patch and Huffington Post, resulting in a 150% increase in referral traffic. John later became the Editor-in-Chief at Patch.com, leading news policies and managing national breaking news coverage. John then founded their own company called Walking Media, where they provided editorial leadership and delivered longform features for Fast Company and custom content campaigns for a PC company, as well as oversight for Bomoda and InsideHook. John joined DNAinfo as VP of Innovation and Editor-in-Chief, before moving to SB Nation where they held roles as Director of Team Brands, Executive Director, and currently serves as the VP of Content.

John Ness completed their education with a strong focus on journalism and liberal arts. In 1994, they attended The University of the South, where they pursued a degree in English with a specialization in US History. John successfully completed their undergraduate studies in 1998. In 2005, they enrolled in the Fordham Gabelli School of Business, although no specific degree or field of study is provided. Finally, in 2023, John attended Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism as a Sulzberger Fellow, concentrating on Community Product.
