SDEA is a globally active non-profit, providing the only data center sustainability certification built entirely on operational data – measured over 12 months and validated by independent third-party audit.

The framework covers four dimensions, certifiable individually or combined:

DC Efficiency – PUE, waste heat recycling, on-premise renewables
IT Efficiency – server, storage and network utilization, efficient technology
Carbon Footprint – life-cycle emissions of the energy used
Water – WUE, including water recycling and water stress

Results are graded Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze, with a Plus variant for low-carbon energy and efficient water use.

Two products carry the methodology:

SDEA Label is the certification itself. It covers three scopes: physical data center infrastructure, IT infrastructure, or both combined – for example, an enterprise running its own data center and servers. Certified operators include Digital Realty, HPE, or Portus Data Centers.

The SDEA Navigator is an online self-assessment tool covering the same framework. Operators use it for internal optimization, for ESG reporting, or as the pathway to the Label.

SDEA engages with policy stakeholders in Switzerland, Germany, Japan, and Canada. Recent recognition includes the DCW Award 2026 for "Special Contribution to Improving Energy Efficiency" and Runner-Up at the DCS Awards 2026 for "Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability and Efficiency".
