Buck has over 20 years leading a US public investment company and is a venture capital leader. A serial investor in growth companies and an expert in business transformation and technology. Buck is known for a "coach-like” style of management that encourages teamwork and camaraderie.
Buck is co-founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Actua (formerly ICG and Internet Capital Group). Buck founded Internet Capital Group in 1996 and prior to that he was Vice President of acquisitions for Safeguard Scientifics, Inc., where he led many of Safeguard’s investments through the mid-1990s, including Diamond Technology, ChromoVision and Video Server. He also was responsible for developing and executing Safeguard’s multimedia and Internet investment strategies. In addition to serving as Chairman of the Board for Actua,, he is also Chairman of the Starfinder Foundation, a non-profit organization, the Board of Advisors of the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative and on the Board of Visitors of the Kenan-Flagler Business School at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Buck is a director of several technology startups including Critical Alert, Diagnostic Bio Chips, Dropps and Margaux. He is on the advisory boards of the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative, the UNC Kenan–Flagler Business School, and the Vetri Foundation and Starfinder Foundation. Previously, he was a director of Breakaway Solutions, Channel Intelligence, Familywyze, ICG Commerce and VerticalNet. Before Safeguard, Buck was President and co-founder of Centralized Management Systems, Inc., a medical supply company, which he sold in 1987. Previously, he spent three years at CoreStates in the commercial lending group.
In 2000, Buck was named the Entrepreneur of the Year by E&Y and received the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award from the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group.
