John was admitted as an attorney in California in the early 1980s and later as a Hong Kong solicitor. Since the mid-1990s, he has practiced cross-border corporate and transactional law straddling Hong Kong, mainland China and the US., serving business clients including startups and venture investors. John has been an active angel investor since the late-1990s, and has worked in various capacities as an investor, startup advisor, legal counsel for startups or angels and VCs, and occasionally a co-founder.
In 2017, with the support of like-minded friends, he formed a new angel investment club in Hong Kong called PRD Angels. The Club is a trail-blazing attempt in Hong Kong to build an organized channel to nurture and promote local angel investment.
John wrote two books on angel investing. In addition to an earlier Chinese title, John is the principal editor and contributor of Angel Financing in Asia Pacific – A Guidebook for Investors and Entrepreneurs (Emerald, 2016) – the first book of its kind to look at angel investment practices from a pan-Asian perspective.
John Y. Lo was born in Shanghai, grew up in Hong Kong, and built a legal career between Hong Kong and California. He holds BA, JD and MBA degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, MS degree (Sociology) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and MS (Taxation) degree from Golden Gate University, San Francisco.
