Simon Frankel

Simon Frankel is a Judge on the San Francisco Superior Court, a position held since March 2023. They are the co-author of *Law, Ethics, and the Visual Arts, 6th edition* (Cambridge University Press 2025), a key reference in art law, and serve as a lecturer-in-law at Stanford Law School, co-teaching a course on Art and the Law. Prior to their judicial role, Frankel practiced law for over 28 years, focusing on commercial litigation, copyright and trademark matters, and legal issues related to visual art. They also served as a commissioner for the San Francisco Arts Commission from 2013 to 2019. Frankel holds a JD from Yale Law School and graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge and Harvard University.
