Creative Director at SHE-CAN

Cari Borja's work experience includes roles at various organizations. cari is currently working as a Participant in the Food Lab at Google, where they collaborate with industry leaders to create positive change in food systems. cari also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the California College of the Arts, teaching courses on design research and ethnography. Additionally, they are a partner and curatorial board member at Clio's Bookstore and Bar, dedicated to inspiring and refreshing the way people think about contemporary culture. Cari has also worked as an Adjunct Professor at San Jose State University and served as the Chief of Staff to Alice Waters at The Edible Schoolyard Project. cari has been a board member at the Creative Growth Art Center, promoting arts and disabilities, and at National Novel Writing Month, empowering creative writing. Cari has their own business called cari borja/clothesmaker, where they host salon dinners and events. cari is also the Creative Director of SHE-CAN, a non-profit empowering low-income young women. Cari has written a blog since 2014, focusing on visual essays and interviews with friends and collaborators.

Cari Borja has a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology and Film, which they obtained from the University of California, Berkeley in the years 1996-2001. Prior to that, they earned an M.A. in Social Anthropology from SOAS University of London in 1995-1996. Their undergraduate studies were conducted at the College of the Holy Cross from 1989 to 1993, where they obtained a B.A. in Economics and Art History. During their junior year, they attended the University of Reading in 1991-1992 as part of a study abroad program, focusing on Art History, Philosophy of Religion, Sociology, and Aesthetics. Cari Borja's secondary education took place at Leominster High School from 1986 to 1989.
