The Società Isole Eolie Melbourne is one of the oldest, continuously active, social and cultural associations of Italian origin, in Australia. Our association had its beginnings as a benevolent society serving Aeolian immigrants, nowadays, our role has developed into maintaining Aeolian culture and promoting the broader needs of those in the greater Aeolian community, Italian and Australian communities.
The seven Aeolian Islands (in Italian, Le Isole Eolie) are geographically situated in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically Il Mare Tirreno, north of Sicily. This volcanic archipelago, which is distant enough to be relatively free of industrial pollution, is blessed with natural beauty and an excellent climate. But until the tourist boom of the early 1970s, there had never been a sustained level of employment opportunities for its inhabitants. For this reason, Aeolians migrated to many parts of the world.

It is estimated that about 1000 Aeolians settled in Australia between 1860 and 1890. There was a spur of new arrivals in the 1920s, and as a result of post-Second World War migration, about 30,000 Aeolians and their children have come to reside in Australia, of which approximately 70% are in Victoria.

For the past 99 years, the Societa' Isole Eolie has been the main hub and focal point for Aeolians- a place to garner inspiration, to meet and share experiences. The Societa' facilitates community interaction through its involvement in social and artistic performances, dances, films, exhibitions, excursions, picnics, youth events and religious festivities.

I would like to extend an invitation to you to attend our 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Saturday 2nd August 2025, at the Pullman Melbourne Albert Park.

In August 2025, the Societa Isole Eolie will mark a century of cultural and social impact in Melbourne
