Matt Smith has worked for a variety of companies, beginning in 2003 as a Postdoctoral Researcher at UC Davis / Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 2006, they moved to Argonne National Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Researcher. In 2009, they became the Director of Operations at Calera Corporation. In 2012, they were the Director of Development at Simbol Materials, where they constructed and commissioned a demonstration plant for extraction of lithium from geothermal brine, and pioneered lithium chlor-alkali and carbonation technologies for conversion to high margin lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate for battery use. In 2013, they were the Director of Technical Services at K2 Pure Solutions. Finally, in 2016, they began work at Sight Machine, where they have held the roles of Sr. Vice President of Digital Transformation, Vice President of Digital Transformation, and Senior Director of Customer Development - Operations.
Matt Smith obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemistry from the University of Essex between 1991 and 1994. Matt then went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of East Anglia between 1999 and 2002. In September 1999, they became a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
