The Smart Escape System is an innovative building control system designed to streamline the evacuation of building occupants and improve the effectiveness of first responders in high stress, high stakes emergency scenarios.

The system has four main use cases: Fire evacuation, lockdown / active shooter scenarios, emergency medical navigation and non-emergency building navigation. 

The system guides occupants in these four scenarios with a series of small, dual-sided light indicators placed throughout the corridors and rooms of the building. One side of the system’s indicators will display a cascade of green lights to navigate occupants along the safest path to exit the building, while the other will display red lights to guide first responders to the source of the threat.

The hallmark of the Smart Escape System is its capacity to adapt to the emergency scenario as it changes and evolves. For fire evacuation, the system will account for the known location(s) of the fire and guide people away from those places while also accounting for corridor and doorway congestion. It will always direct people along the safest possible path over the quickest, as the quickest may not always be viable. For a lockdown scenario, the system would rely on external input (Such as camera monitoring and gunshot detectors) to track the location of the threat. The system will then inform occupants whether to hide, prepare to fight or evacuate. In the case of the system directing occupants to run, it will guide them along the safest possible path. All the while the intruder is completely unaware of the system doing its job.
