Smart Project Management (Smart PM) is a values-driven, client-side project management company delivering complex construction and infrastructure projects across Aotearoa.

Proudly 100% Ngāi Tahu whānau-owned, we blend deep cultural heritage with technical excellence to deliver projects that uplift communities, protect cultural values, and achieve enduring results.

Founded in 2019 by Director Sam Summerton — whose 20 years’ experience ranges from carpentry to managing multi-million-dollar developments.

Smart PM was built on the belief that strong relationships and purpose must guide every project. Inspired by the principle mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei (for us and our children after us), we aim to leave a positive legacy for every community we work with.

We offer full lifecycle project leadership with a focus on cost efficiency, solid control, and delivery certainty. Our expertise covers:

• Civic & Community Infrastructure

• Commercial Developments

• Marae, Rūnanga & Iwi-led Projects

• Regional & Remote Projects

• Health, Housing & Social Infrastructure

From strategic advisory and design management through procurement, construction oversight, and handover, we act as trusted client advocates, ensuring projects are realistically scoped, accurately costed, and aligned with cultural and organisational goals.

With a proven record managing culturally significant, publicly funded, and complex commercial projects, ranging from a $30M visitor centre in Punakaiki to rūnanga-led land purchase due diligence. Smart PM combines practical experience, rigorous systems, and a commitment to mana-enhancing partnerships.

We are more than project managers, we are relationship-builders, cultural navigators, and champions for better outcomes in the built environment. Partnering with Smart PM means supporting the social, cultural, and economic wellbeing of Aotearoa, one project at a time.
