SmartStart Business Development helps rural communities identify, educate, and support local entrepreneurs and microbusinesses through the SmartStart Navigator, an online platform designed specifically for aspiring and existing microbusiness owners.

The truth is most communities have more entrepreneurs than they realize. Home-based businesses, makers, freelancers, food vendors, contractors, consultants, and side hustlers often operate below the radar and rarely engage with traditional business support systems. At the same time, many don't know where to turn for guidance or local resources.

The SmartStart Navigator serves as a community's front door for entrepreneurship and microbusiness development. Through guided education, local resource connections, and progress tracking, the Navigator helps business owners move from idea to startup to growth while connecting them with the right resources at the right time.

Communities use the SmartStart Navigator to:

• Identify and engage hidden entrepreneurs and microbusinesses
• Build a pipeline of future Main Street and storefront-ready businesses
• Connect business owners with local mentors, service providers, and support organizations
• Strengthen and organize their entrepreneurial ecosystem
• Improve outcomes for grants, loans, pitch competitions, and business assistance programs
• Extend the capacity of chambers, Main Street programs, economic development organizations, and local governments without adding staff

The Navigator provides communities with a scalable system that helps entrepreneurs find answers, access support, take action, and make progress. At the same time, community leaders gain insights into the businesses, challenges, and opportunities shaping their local economy.

Our mission is simple: help communities build stronger local economies by helping more microbusinesses succeed.
