The University of California, Irvine Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) is a selective team of undergraduate students responsible for managing a diversified portfolio of equities, fixed income and alternatives. Members conduct equity/fixed income/alternatives research, develop investment theses, present recommendations to the CFA Society, and actively monitor portfolio risk and performance.

Participation in SMIF requires an application and interview process, with members selected from among the top-performing students. Students gain hands-on experience in valuation, portfolio construction, macroeconomic analysis, and risk management in order to bridge academic finance with real capital allocation.

SMIF members have investment banking, asset management, sales & trading, wealth management, and consulting placements across firms such as Centerview Partners, JPMorgan, Barclays, UBS, Citi, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, Capital Group, PIMCO, State Street, UC Investments, PwC, KPMG, Mercer Advisors, and Creative Planning.
