Science Director at Smith-Root

Patrick Cooney has been working in the field of fisheries since 1997. Patrick began their career as a Hatchery Assistant at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. In 2000, they moved to James Cook University as a Research Technician. The following year, they accepted a Research Technician position at The University of Arizona. In 2001, they also began working at the University of Florida as a Fish Biologist, Graduate Research Assistant, and Research Scientist. From 2005 to 2011, they were a Fish Biologist at North Carolina State University, where they conducted research on the impacts of dams on the movement of amphidromous fish species in Puerto Rico and assessed the movement, survival, and growth of three trout species in the mountains of North Carolina. In 2011, they co-founded The Fisheries Blog, where they are an Author, Editor, and Co-Founder. Since 2013, they have been working at Smith-Root Inc. as Science Director and Director of Electrofishing Science; Business Development Director.

Patrick Cooney's education history includes a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Marine Sciences and Biology from the University of Miami, which they obtained between 1997 and 2001. Patrick then went on to pursue a Master of Science (M.S.) in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at the University of Florida, which they obtained between 2002 and 2004. Afterward, they studied Fish Migration at North Carolina State University between 2011 and 2013. Patrick also attended James Cook University, where they studied Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography in 2000. In addition to their educational background, Cooney has obtained several certifications, including Electrofishing Team Leader from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 2005, Motorboat Operators Certification Course from the U.S. Department of the Interior in 2005, SCUBA certified from PADI in 1995, and Certified Fisheries Professional from the American Fisheries Society in 2013.
