Jim R. Smith Sr. founded Smith & Company in 1964 as its sole owner. Over the decades, the company developed and currently owns more than two million square feet of retail and office properties throughout Houston. Notable shopping centers include Champions Forest Plaza, a premier lifestyle center; Centre at Bunker Hill, anchored by Lowe’s, Costco, and Best Buy; and Echo Lane Shopping Center.

In addition to its retail and office portfolio, Smith & Company’s investments have included raw land acquisitions, the development of single-tenant assets for national retailers such as CVS, Pier 1, and Starbucks, as well as venture capital investments and oil and gas exploration—highlighting a diversified and adaptive business approach.

After decades of growth, the company underwent a strategic shift in direction, leading to the formation of Smithco Houston to handle the management and operations of its real estate portfolio. This transition allowed the company to streamline its focus, enhance property performance, and position itself for long-term success.

Smith & Company has celebrated over 45 years of achievements, including the 1998 Ernst & Young / Houston Business Journal Legacy Award presented to Champions Forest Plaza for its outstanding architectural design. In March 2001, Jim R. Smith Sr. was featured in the Houston Business Journal as one of the largest retail property owners in Houston.
