In late 2011, the judgment in a 14 year old class action lawsuit entitled Scott v. American Tobacco Company became final. That judgment ordered certain tobacco companies to fund a statewide 10-year smoking cessation program to benefit more than 200,000 Louisiana smokers who are members of the plaintiff class (the "Scott Class"). The recipient of the award was not a single nor group of individuals, but a court-established and court-supervised smoking cessation program to benefit Louisiana residents who began their smoking habit before September 1, 1988.

The tobacco companies have since deposited the funds with the Court and the Smoking Cessation Trust ("SCT") has been established, all pursuant to the judgment.

If you are approved as a MEMBER of the SCOTT CLASS, SCT will arrange for you to receive, at no cost to you, any of the following cessation services: cessation medications, individual / group cessation counseling, telephone quit-line support, and/or Intensive cessation support services. By using these services, evidence suggests that you will increase the success rate of your attempts to stop smoking, and successfully quit - for good!

TOBACCO USE IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF PREVENTABLE DISEASE AND DEATH. Smoking can harm your children, harm pregnant mothers unborn child, cause cancer, strokes, heart disease, gum disease, oral cancer and cause fatal lung disease in non-smokers. SCT is here to assist YOU in taking the first step to take back control of YOUR LIFE from the nicotine addiction.
