SOBOKUYA is a collective of architects and carpenters, based in Hokuto, Japan. Everything we do is shaped by this place. Its mountains, its streams, the rhythm of its seasons. Embracing the natural properties of materials rather than working against them, our carpenters use traditional techniques to work with the wood, and our designers take their inspiration from the natural world and the peace found within in.

Like a river going out to sea, it is this approach that we carry from the mountains and forests of Hokuto to new horizons in Dubai, Vietnam, and beyond. Using the very same techniques used in temples that are standing centuries after they were built, our carpenters have refined their skills over generations, creating bespoke timber structures, interiors, and architectural elements by hand.

Each one of our projects is a conversation between our designers, our carpenters, and the clients themselves. Such a collaborative approach combined with embracing natural, locally sourced materials allows us to create something completely unique every time. Hand-fabricated in Japan, shipped all over the world, then assembled on-site.
At Sobokuya, our skilled carpenters and designers collaborate to create projects that embody our unique approach to design. We believe in achieving harmony between human lifestyle and nature, and that great design arises from simplicity rather than excessive decoration.

By merging traditional Japanese construction techniques with modern design and materials, our projects are crafted to engage with their surroundings, reflecting the unique characteristics of their users and environment.
