Maurice Jackson

Maurice Jackson teaches in the History Department and African American Studies Program and is Affiliated Professor of Music (Jazz) at Georgetown University. He previously worked as a longshoreman, shipyard rigger, construction worker, and community organizer. He has authored many articles, in addition to his book, Let This Voice Be Heard, Anthony Benezet Father of Atlantic Abolitionism, and co-edited the book African Americans and the Haitian Revolution: Selected Essays and Historical Documents. He has recently lectured in France, Turkey, Puerto Rico, and Qatar.

Jackson is a 2009 inductee into the Washington, D.C. Hall of Fame and a delegate to the original D.C. Statehood Constitutional Convention. He was appointed by the Mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia as the first chair of the D.C. Commission on African American Affairs, and served as Special Advisor to Georgetown University President Jack DeGioia on D.C. Affairs. Jackson has a B.A. in Political Economy from Antioch College, an M.A. in History from Georgetown, and a Ph.D. in History from Georgetown. Jackson has a passion for jazz and wrote the liner notes to the two jazz CDs by Charlie Haden and Hank Jones.
