The ‘Society for the Protection of the Solent Area’ was formed in 1956 by a group of West Solent residents, politicians and landowners opposed to the Hook Oil Refinery Project.  

The Royal Yachting Association provided support in partnership with the ‘Council for the Preservation of Rural England’.  After winning the fight against what would have been another Fawley scale refinery on the Warsash/Titchfield shore, Solent Protection Society as it became went on to successfully block the building of a nuclear power station at Hamstead Farm on the Newtown River in the Isle of Wight.  

Over the years, the Solent Protection Society has fought several important campaigns aimed at protecting the livelihoods of those who live and work in the Solent area.  At the same time, the society's council members constantly monitor Local Authority planning applications and Marine Licence application around the Solent shoreline with a view to 'protect the view from the sea', one of the society's founding principles.

The beating heart of the Society is its Council, a group from all walks of professional life across the Solent region meeting and working, either as a full Council, in sub-groups or in association with other parties with whom we share common goals. The members of the SPS Council are all local residents with intimate knowledge of the regions of the Solent and a combined network of like minds.
