Arun Shivanandan, PhD has extensive work experience in the field of data science and engineering. Arun spent several years at Solvay, where they held the position of Lead Data Scientist. In this role, they led small teams of PhD and non-PhD data scientists and engineers, delivering data products for various projects, including those for large industrial plants. Arun has experience in delivering solutions related to tabular data, time series, NLP, optimization, and chemoinformatics. Arun has also been involved in architecting and delivering end-to-end data software products, including MLOps and software design.
Prior to their time at Solvay, Arun worked as a Data Scientist at the global level, focusing on developing solutions for molecular prediction, product recommendation, and production optimization in plants. Arun emphasized UI/UX and iterative improvement in these projects.
Before joining Solvay, Arun pursued postdoctoral research at Institut Curie from 2016 to 2018. Arun also conducted doctoral research at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2011 to 2015, and a visiting doctoral researcher position at ETH Zurich in 2011. Arun's career began at INRIA, where they worked on a master thesis project from 2009 to 2011.
Prior to their research career, Arun worked at IBM as a Software Engineer and Functional Lead. Arun was involved in developing an Enterprise Knowledge Management System and made contributions in areas such as Apache Solr integration, automation of data scraping and visualization, page load speed optimization, and user management. Arun was trained as a Middleware/SOA professional by IBM's entry-level initiation program and was promoted to Functional Lead within one year. Arun holds certifications as a Sun Certified Java Professional and IBM Certified Unix Professional.
Arun Shivanandan, PhD, has a strong educational background in the field of computer science and computational biology. Arun obtained a Bachelor of Technology degree from the National Institute of Technology Calicut in 2006. Arun then pursued a Master of Science degree in Computer Science, specializing in Machine Learning and Computer Vision, at Université Grenoble Alpes from 2009 to 2011. Later, Arun completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biomathematics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2011 to 2015. Additionally, they have acquired several certifications in different areas such as product management, data warehousing, decision-making and scenarios, and finance.
