Senior Vice President, Chief Communications & Public Affairs Officer & Head Of Country Management at Solvay

Marcel Halma has a diverse and extensive work experience. Their most recent position is as the SVP of Communications, Government & Public Affairs, and DEI at Solvay since October 2023. Prior to that, they were the Vice President of Group Government & Public Affairs and Head of Country Management at Solvay from September 2021 to September 2023. Marcel also served as a Member of the Board of Advisors at FiscalNote from March 2021 onwards.

Before joining Solvay, Marcel worked at Nouryon, where they held the positions of Vice-President of Public Affairs & Government Relations from October 2018 to August 2021, and Acting Chief Communications Officer from December 2018 to May 2019. Prior to Nouryon, they held various roles at AkzoNobel, including Global Director of Government & Public Affairs, Head of Government & Public Affairs Europe & EU, Director of Communications of Global Business Area Specialty Chemicals (interim), and Public Affairs Manager Netherlands and Manager EU Energy & Climate Policy.

Marcel also has experience working with the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition (DSGC) as a Company Representative from January 2015 to December 2017. Additionally, they served as the President of the Dutch Association of Public Affairs Professionals (BVPA) from January 2013 to January 2015.

Earlier in their career, Marcel worked at Netbeheer Nederland as the Deputy Director General and Head of Public Affairs & Communications, and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Director of Communications for the Dutch Minister for European Affairs and as a Diplomat. Marcel also held a role at SVB Sociale Verzekeringsbank as the Head of Communications (acting) at the division FVP.

Marcel began their career with an internship at the Atlantische Commissie / Netherlands Atlantic Association.

Overall, Marcel Halma has held various leadership positions in communications, public affairs, and government relations across multiple industries and organizations throughout their career.

Marcel Halma has a Master's Degree in Political Sciences from the University of Amsterdam, which they obtained from 1991 to 1995. Marcel also has a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the University of Amsterdam, received from 1989 to 1991. Additionally, Marcel has completed various executive courses and training programs, including a Leadership Development Programme on Adapting to Changing Contexts from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, an Executive Course on Managing Risk in Complex Projects from the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business, an Executive Course on Corporate Communication from Erasmus University Rotterdam, and a Diplomatic Training Course from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Marcel has also completed post-graduate courses on international relations from The Clingendael Academy of International Relations and economics of European integration from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
