David Caplan

Chief Technical Officer at SolveBio

David Caplan is the current Chief Technical Officer at SolveBio. Prior to this, they were the Lead Web Developer at 5by, which was acquired by StumbleUpon. David has also worked as a Graduate Student at the University of Toronto.

David's work experience has been focused on web development and research. As the Lead Web Developer at 5by, they were responsible for architecting and implementing the beta version of the web app. The app consisted of a Django API on the backend and AngularJS on the frontend. David and their team successfully launched their MVP at Jason Calacanis' 2013 Launch Festival in San Francisco after just 4 months of design and development.

As a Graduate Student at the University of Toronto, David completed a Masters in Biochemistry in the computational biology lab of Dr. Régis Pomès. David's research project involved the study of proton pumping in cytochrome c oxidase, the terminal enzyme in the electron transport chain. David used molecular dynamics and free energy simulations of bacterial oxidase to investigate functional hydration and ion selectivity in its proton uptake channels. In layman's terms, David's research project involved using massive supercomputers to run complicated simulations to figure out how some proteins (little "machines") harness the energy of hydrogen and oxygen to generate power.

David's experience with web development and research makes him well-suited for their current role as Chief Technical Officer at SolveBio. In this role, they are responsible for leading the technical team and overseeing all technical aspects of the company. This includes developing and managing the company's technology infrastructure, as well as working on new features and products.

David Caplan's educational career began at Lower Canada College. David then went on to study biochemistry at the University of Toronto, where they earned their Master of Science (MSc) degree. Finally, they completed their education with a BHSc in bioinformatics from the University of Calgary.

Some of their coworkers include Gopal Ramachandran - Head of Machine Learning, David Gross - Graphic Designer, and Dandan Xu - Chief Scientific Officer. Their manager is Mark Kaganovich, CEO.
