Sovern LA was founded in 2020 with a community-first model that empowers Black, Indigenous, women and non-binary folks of color (BIWOC+) artists through exhibition opportunities, mentorship, and wellness and mental health support while maintaining a commitment to care that allows us to meet the ever changing socio-emotional needs of our community. We opened the doors to our 1800 square-foot art gallery and healing justice center in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles in the fall of 2021, offering sliding-scale programming to our diverse audience. Each year we present 4-6 unique exhibitions for our community along with 120+ sliding-scale workshops–resulting in 1,213 unique attendees–with 95% of those facilitators identifying as BIWOC+.
