Space West is a strategic collaborative platform, based in Västra Götaland, designed to support the development of a more commercially-oriented space sector in Sweden – that will in turn contribute to both economic growth and national security.

A primary focus of the platform is to create the necessary pre-conditions to enable the development of a domestic ecosystem focused on the commercial utilization of space and associated dual-use applications.

Despite a long history in space research, Sweden has not kept up with recent developments in commercially-driven space activities, particularly when it comes to dual-use capabilities with relevance to national security requirements. To strengthen Sweden’s position going forward, targeted efforts are required where regional competencies are leveraged to increase national competitiveness.

The objective is to foster collaboration among like-minded entities and individuals (from government, industry and academia – both inside and outside of Sweden) who wish to actively participate in evolving the Swedish space sector to become more commercially relevant and technologically competitive.

Through various collaborative activities, the platform aims to:
• increase the commercial relevance and technological competitiveness of the Swedish space sector
• create new business opportunities for the Swedish space sector, via cross-sector and cross-border collaborations
• contribute to national economic growth, by increasing value creation in the space sector
• contribute to national security, by facilitating the development of end-to-end “space as a service” capabilities with direct relevance to defense-related requirements
