Spatial Justice Aotearoa (SJA) is an independent research, design, planning and advocacy practice based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand.

We work at the intersection of spatial justice, urbanism, and built environment practice, bringing rigorous, kaupapa Māori-informed research to bear on the places and systems that shape everyday life.

SJA was founded on the conviction that the built environment is never neutral. Who gets to shape our cities, towns and neighbourhoods -- and whose knowledge and values are centred in that process -- matters enormously. Our work is driven by a commitment to ensuring that Māori and underserved communities have a meaningful voice in the design and planning of their environments.

We offer:

Research and evaluation
Architectural, urban design and planning services
Policy advice and advocacy

Our team brings together expertise across research, architecture, planning and community engagement, with a track record of competitive research funding, peer-reviewed publication, and direct policy impact.
We work with iwi, hapū, local government, central government, community organisations, and the private sector.
