Fondée à Montréal en 1869, la Société Canadienne pour la Prévention de la Cruauté envers les Animaux (maintenant mieux connue sous l’appellation SPCA de Montréal) fut la première organisation de protection des animaux au Canada. À ses débuts, la principale préoccupation de la SPCA était d’améliorer la situation des chevaux de trait. Aujourd’hui, elle est la plus grande société pour la protection des animaux au Québec. 

La SPCA de Montréal est un organisme à but non lucratif qui dépend presque exclusivement des dons du public pour effectuer son travail. Elle accueille et soigne près de 15 000 animaux abandonnés chaque année.

The Canadian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (now fondly known as the Montreal SPCA) was the first humane society in Canada, founded in Montreal in 1869. During the early years, the primary concern of the SPCA was improving the treatment of work horses. Today, the Montreal SPCA is the largest society for the protection of animals in Quebec. 

The Montreal SPCA is a non-profit organization that relies almost exclusively on public donations to carry out its work. The animal welfare organization welcomes and cares for nearly 15,000 abandoned animals each year.
