Founded by former military austere and prehospital medical experts, SMS operates with the intent of bringing the best military and international medical practices and operational techniques to the larger medical community in order to enable, enhance, and elevate learning and practice. 

SMS sponsors the International Committee of Austere Emergency Care (AEC), and is developing AEC training and education curricula. This peer-reviewed curricula is a continuing education offering to introduce medical care in austere environments based on military special operations best practices gleaned from remote operations over the past decade. 

SMS also sponsors the Prolonged Field Care Collective to foster the continual development of austere medicine prehospital practices.
