James Long

James Long has over 38 years of work experience in the field of Physics and Engineering. James began their career in 1981 as a Graduate Engineer at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). During this time, they designed and commissioned a muon particle source for a new research facility. In 1988, they joined Rieter-Scragg Ltd as an Automation Project Team Leader, where they were responsible for a key automation development involving a robot to unload bobbins of finished yarn from Scragg machines. In 1992, they became an Automation Consultant at Becromal SpA, where they specified, designed, programmed and commissioned two automatic test machines for the quality control laboratory. In 1995, they joined Kratos Analytical Ltd as a Mechanical/Systems Engineer, designing and developing new features to extend the instrument performance, and improving existing designs to reduce cost and speed manufacture. In 1997, they joined TTP Labtech as a Senior Engineer, leading teams of engineers, scientists, designers and technicians on various projects. Finally, in 2019, they became the Director of Physics & Engineering at Sphere Fluidics Limited, as well as a Group Leader, Physics and Engineering.

James Long attended the University of Leeds from 1982 to 1985 and obtained a BSc in Mechanical Engineering. James then attended The University of Manchester from 1991 to 1992 and obtained an MSc in Control & Information Technology.
