Boyd Johnson

Boyd Johnson is the current Chief Legal Officer at Spire. Prior to this, they served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer at Merrill Corporation from January 2009 to December 2012. At Merrill, Boyd was responsible for leading the Legal, Security, Regulatory Compliance, Corporate Governance, Sourcing, Real Estate, and Facilities functions. Boyd was also responsible for performing corporate secretary and governance functions, as well as providing strategic guidance to the corporation and various business units.

Some of Boyd’s key accomplishments during their time at Merrill include successfully managing commercial transactions, litigation, product liability, intellectual property, real estate, financial agreements, insurance, and employment and employee compensation and benefit matters. Boyd also successfully managed regulatory and corporate compliance including all public filings and advising on privacy, antitrust, FCPA, USA Patriot Act, HIPAA, PCI, export and other regulatory matters.

Boyd is known for their ability to provide clients with legal advice and counsel that helps identify, anticipate, and mitigate legal risks. Boyd is also skilled in training clients on legal issues, policies, and processes. Boyd has retained and supervised outside counsel, as well as established and maintained Merrill’s relationship with the SEC. Boyd regularly held meetings with the Division of Investment Management, Division of Trading and Markets, and Division of Corporate Finance while at Merrill and provided comment letters in response to concept releases and proposed rules.

Boyd Johnson attended the University of North Dakota School of Law, where they received their Juris Doctor, Cum Laude. Boyd also attended the University of North Dakota for their Bachelor of Science - BS, Magna Cum Laude. Their field of study was Aeronautical Studies and their minor was Economics. Boyd Johnson is also certified as a Licensed Attorney and as a Licensed Commercial Pilot from the Federal Aviation Administration.
