Splash on Earth began as a community idea during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As members of the grassroots organization Friends of Parkway Forest Park, we witnessed two growing challenges: increasing food waste and a community struggling with isolation, declining mental well-being, and limited opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills. We set out to create something that would bring people back together while making climate action joyful, creative, and accessible.

Inspired by cultural traditions of temporary street art and guided by our commitment to reduce waste, we began experimenting with eco-paint recipes made from rescued food. After testing different mixtures in our local park, we discovered something unexpected—people didn't just stop to watch; they picked up a brush and joined in. In that moment, we knew we had created something special. We quickly realized that when climate action is playful, creative, and hands-on, people are eager to learn, connect, and become part of the solution.

What began with rescued food donated by our local FreshCo and North York Harvest, a Neighbourhood Climate Action Grant from the City of Toronto, and a small group of passionate volunteers has grown into a movement that has engaged thousands of residents through eco-paint murals, school programs, scientific research, and partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and universities.

Today, Splash on Earth transforms rescued food into vibrant public art that sparks conversations, strengthens communities, and inspires climate action.
