Stockport Hydro, a renewable energy scheme at Otterspool Weir on the river Goyt near Marple, Stockport, is Greater Manchester's first community-owned hydro-electric project.

We have been fully up and running since October 2012, generating renewable electricity which we feed into the National Grid.  The power earns support from the Government's Feed-in-Tarif and the Environement Agency has approved our operation to ensure no damage to the river's eco-system and wildlife.  

Our twin Archimedes Screws named "Thunder and Lightening" are working well. 

Our main source of income comes from the sale of electricity and the "FiTs" payment we recieve for each unit of electricity we generate. This income will be used to offset the costs of the scheme, pay back our creditors and generate a return for our investors.  Most importantly of all, in additon to contributing to a reduced carbon footprint, in future years we will be able to use surplus funds generated by the scheme to support and invest in a range of other local community projects.
