Stop Killing the Internet is a global campaign against the growing push to make the internet smaller, more controlled, and more surveilled in the name of safety.

For two decades, the problems facing young people online were ignored. Platforms failed to act, governments failed to address the root causes, and the people most affected were rarely invited into the debate. Now, instead of real accountability, we are seeing the same pattern across the UK, Canada, the United States, and the European Union: age verification, ID checks, curfews, time limits, platform lockouts, and proposals that move surveillance deeper into private digital life.

We believe this is the wrong answer.

The internet is no longer optional. It is a place of education, connection, culture, work, political debate, and public life. Like any public space, it has serious problems. But serious problems require serious solutions, not mass identity checks, not treating everyone as suspicious by default, and not excluding young people while claiming to protect them.

Online safety must not become a cover for control. Children and young people deserve protection, but they also deserve to be heard. Adults deserve privacy, autonomy, and access. Everyone deserves an internet shaped by rights, accountability, and democratic debate rather than fear, political theatre, and corporate lobbying.

Stop Killing the Internet exists to bring together the global rights-respecting community and demand something better: an internet that is safer because it is more accountable, not because it is more locked down; more democratic, not more controlled; more open, not smaller.
