Melanie Barkley

Melanie Barkley serves as the Executive Director and Chief Administrator at Alabama Virtual Academy (ALVA) with experience at Stride, Inc. since June 2022. Prior to this role, Barkley worked at Athens City Schools from July 2015 to May 2022 as the Secondary Curriculum and District Technology Coordinator and Principal at Athens Middle. Previous positions include Principal at Discovery Middle School and Mill Creek Elementary in Madison City Schools from March 2009 to June 2015, Assistant Principal at Sparkman Middle in Madison County Schools from May 2004 to March 2009, and Secondary Reading Specialist for the Alabama Department of Education and Madison County Schools. Barkley holds an Educational Specialists degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a Master's degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Tennessee State University, a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education - Social Science from Athens State University, and an Associate of Science degree in Secondary Education and Teaching from Calhoun Community College.
