Student U is a community organization that uses the power of education, advocacy, and leadership to build a just and equitable Durham. We empower and equip first-generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and their educators to become the leaders that will transform our city for the better. We support this transformation with an approach that combines three key elements: our whole-families approach to college access and success programming; our place as an innovation hub for developing and sharing best practices in education; and our commitment to supporting student- and family-led advocacy and change efforts in our city. Together, we’re creating a Durham where all students succeed.

The Student Support Services team at Student U provides comprehensive support to students and their families to ensure academic success and personal well-being. The team offers tailored advocacy, counseling, and community partnership initiatives. They work collaboratively on college readiness programs, mental health resources, family engagement, and innovative educational practices to empower students as leaders and advocates in Durham.

The Education and Teaching team at Student U is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging educational experiences to first-generation college students in Durham Public Schools. This team includes educators across various subjects and grade levels who provide classroom instruction, after-school support, and summer programs. They work closely with students and their families to ensure academic success and personal growth, while also developing and sharing innovative best practices in education to transform the community.

Education and Teaching

The Administration and Management team at Student U is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and optimal resource utilization of the organization. They manage facility rentals and maintenance, oversee financial and human resources, coordinate community garden projects, maintain data integrity, provide bilingual administrative support, and handle reception duties. This team is pivotal in supporting Student U's mission by facilitating a conducive environment for educational programming and advocacy efforts.

Through storytelling, social media, blogging, and strategic communication, they highlight successes, share best practices, and advocate for the organization's mission. Their goal is to raise awareness, engage stakeholders, and drive support for Student U’s programs and advocacy efforts, ultimately contributing to the creation of a just and equitable Durham.
